REPORT
I have, of course, lit
Another cigarette.
Where? When? Why?
For those reporters among you
It's somewhere past one AM
On a farm near Toowoomba
Where the wild wind wanders.
Lighting this thing
Was the last course of action
I had in my furry mind,
But, light it I did
For one needs company
In this spongy darkness.
This poem is, of course,
A very conscious attempt to write a poem.
Why?
Beside me I have "A Map of Australian Verse" And "John Betjeman's Collected Poems."
Confronted with these
The necessity
Arose.
